MATERNAL FOUDATION SIRES

We strive to maintain a base of moderately sized, easy-fleshing cow families, all going back several times to older Rito, Traveler, and Juanada breeding. We cross these with more modern terminal-type AI sires to get the best of both ends of the breed to our bull customers. Steer calves that will weigh up well in the fall and trouble-free replacement heifers that will keep you in the cattle business without eating all of your profits.

BAR Dark Canyon 09 left us with some excellent daughters, as I knew he would. Surprisingly, his sons performed very well compared to our terminal AI-sired calves. We were excited to keep several more generations of his daughters when he decided to walk out on some thin pond ice and drown himself. Look for his grandsons sired by BAR Dark Canyon 321 in 2025.

This bull was a cow-maker! Maternal grandsire to several of the bulls selling, his daughters have tight udders with short teats and give ample milk.

Broadback and Wideback Jack lineage both descend from the same originating cow. We felt she was a superior cow in our herd and wanted to propagate her influence. BAR Broadback 928 is the maternal grandsire to several of the bulls selling.

HERD SIRES

We purchased Cole Creek 1322 Auto 717 from Cole Creek Angus of Joliet, Montana, in their 2022 sale. The Cole Creek cow herd is line-bred to emphasize efficient, trouble-free mother cows that thrive in a grassland environment without extra inputs. It’s educational to look through the Cole Creek cow herd. One cow looks just like the next one you will see. All are uniformly perfect uddered and structurally correct in every way. Cole Creek 1322 Auto 717 sons will make the type of cows that will keep you from going broke in the cow business.

Additionally, although this bull is intended to be a cow maker, his sons performed very respectably next to our AI-sired calves.

We bought Duke in the 2024 Hancock Livestock sale. To us, he was a standout among all the potential herd bulls we looked at that spring. His pedigree was closely related to the cattle in our program. Meanwhile, phenotype and individual performance also put him at the top of our list. His first sons are long-spined and straight-topped with a phenomenal amount of width and muscle. On the other hand, his first daughters are deep-ribbed but also display that wedge shape that says broodiness to me. Time will tell with his daughters, though. Duke’s dam is a pathfinder cow.
